I guess he missed the sign?

I guess he missed the sign?

I've been visiting Tai and Mei often as the zoo is staying opened later so I went after work on Thurs. and Friday. I also went this weekend. Today Mei's been acting a bit strange. It hink someone spiked her boo. She was chasing after Tai and wrestling with him. She climbs the tree and hangs upside down to reach him.

Tai has been sleeping on different trees. I also was lucky and saw Tai nursing on the rocks. He tends to be "clingy" when he wants to nurse and Mei usually is in sleep mode. In this photo, he is trying to wake up his mommy for some nursing.

Now a days, the keepers tend to have a hard time picking up the Tai. They tried to lure him in with a boo stick. He would follow them and then sit down and face in the opposite direction of coming in. He kept doing this as if he knew it was time to go in.

Tai is now 48 pounds or could be more last time I heard. I also heard one of the volunteer saying that we might be able to keep him. Reasons being that he's related to most of the pandas back in woolong and not a good canidate for mating. There are 11 male cubs there already. At two years old, he would be another baby to feed. Well, he's not just another baby, he's our baby, hehe! He's too young to be mate of course.
I say just ship over his ummm "stuff" when time comes and artificially inseminate or send him Jing Jing.

when i logged in on blogger, i put simmi the bear instead of simmi the great. oh boy, too much tai for me today!

HI Simmi
I wanted to add that it is getting much harder to pick him up now. They tend to lure him in to get him to walk after them instead of picking him up.

ROFL!! it's not a dirty word. ;-)

i guess i'm so used to hearing scientific terms for body fluids that i had to think about that post frances.

let's hope tai can stay, but, i'm not going to count on it and i'll try to prepare myself for the blow, although i know i'll require sedation if our baby leaves.

Hi all...

somesai, just wanted to express my continued support for your work, and your efforts on behalf of NZ and our favorite panda family.

Rumor or not, I do like the idea of our little baby Tai staying!!! :-)

I love that this site and Flickr are growing in membership. Input has been amazing. So many people from all over the world! I also credit our somesai for opening the door on this all...

Keep up the good work, all... keep smiling and have good panda days!

Hate to be the downer on this but even if Tai is similar to his relations, no one could doubt that he has a unique combination of special genes, not the least of which are from the great PanPan. Tai has been an alpha like PanPan from the moment of his birth. I can't believe anybody would pass him by, not that I can imagine life without him in proximity. Would they give him a girlfriend of his own if he were to stay. Nah, I don't think so and it would be even harder to loose him if hopes continue to be raised.

i said it on the flickr group discussion...what i truly want is that whatever decision is made, it's the best decision for our prince.

Frances, thanks for the great update. I'm so grateful you visit the zoo regularly and give us addicts our daily fixes.

I may be in denial but I refuse to think about Tai leaving. I just want to enjoy him everyday and not think about the future. We don't know what will happen in the next 2 years.

Isn't it 3 when pandas return not 2?

Thanks for the report Frances, and what a funny picture. Butter is always trying to climb up on Mei, but slides off unless, like here, he's got some collateral support.

That's wonderful news/rumour that we might be able to keep Tai. To be honest, if Tai would have more room and more fun in China, I'd be in favor of sending him back, even though that would me we wouldn't see him.

But I think with the new panda enclosure (to be completed around September), the National Zoo will be as good a home as any. It supposedly will be quite roomy, and they'll rotate the three adults throughout the different yards, for "enrichment," i.e., to keep things interesting.

Hi Gang,

Haven't posted in awhile, have been traveling, and now home sick. They've replaced the phrase "sick as a dog" with "sick as Bruce". I did check in with the panda family to get their advice though.

Tian Tian Says I just need more and more of whatever I like and I'll feel better. Momma Mei Xiang told me to go roll down a hill a few times and I'll feel better. And Tai Shan, bless his heart, says all I need to feel better is a big fruitsicle.

All sound good, but not sure they work for kidney infections.

bruce, sorry you've been ill. all the advice from the panda family is good advice, particularly the "eat or drink whatever you like best" won't help your infection, but then you really won't care.

also, watching tai's antics are good for what ails you. boosts seratonin levels inna brain.

Sorry you're not well Bruce. Heed the panda advice!

Bruce, maybe a big penicillin fruitsicle will help? Get well soonest.

Bruce,

I hope you feel better and Tai is counting on you to get better soon. He might transfer some of his superpanda powers to you.

Actually, pandas are traditionally considered to have healing powers. So stay tuned to the panda cam and blogs, Bruce, and soak up those healing vibes. I hope you feel better very soon.

Thanks for all the good thoughts from everyone. The day refuses to get better though, had to put my 16 year old cat to sleep today. Right now looking at Tai Shan plotting his next adventure would go a long way to helping me feel better.

((((Bruce)))), I'm so sorry about your cat. My husband and I had to put our old cat to sleep some years ago, and we still miss him.

Bruce: We've been missing and waiting for the return of you and your lighthearted insights to all things panda, so it is with real sadness I hear you've come home in less than fine fettle (whatever a fettle maybe). Please know you have a whole lot of people--and pandas--wishing you a full and speedy recovery from your illness.

On the loss of your companion cat, my deepest condolences. I know the pain of having an end come to the unconditional love an independent spirit can offer so you have my special sympathies. Stay strong, Bruce.
Warmest regards,
FrancesD

ohhh bruce...our animal companions are so dear to us and being ill AND dealing with the death of a beloved friend is a double whammy. my best friend, a young man in oregon, still grieves for his beloved woos (a cat) after several years. our animals show us so much love and their lives are too short.

know that your cat loved you and know that we cry with you. take your time, all of us have lost an animal friend and all of us know that pain takes time.

i did see a picture of tai in his bucket with his ball that put me in mind of a racecar driver. maybe he could have an adventure like that? or...maybe a private eye a la dashiel hammet? your imagination will help you to heal.

i'm gonna fire up a cauldron and send some comfort to ya...not that i'm a real witch, but i try to meet the expectations raised by my handle. i do have a cauldron though...very modern...it's 'lectric.

rest and heal yourself...the panda advice along with watching the pandas is still gonna be your best medicine.

So sorry to hear of your kitty's passing. I hope you had 16 wonderful years with her (or him?). They really leave us way too soon. We put our doggie to sleep two months ago - he was also 16 years old. I hope they all go to a better place where they can continue to frolick and play like kittens and puppies (which they will always be to us). Hope you will be on the mend soon. Tai awaits your return!

A tough decision to make, but one that is necessary. My heart goes out to you, Bruce. I've been there 3x in my life. I never gets any better. Stay strong and remember your kitty friend with smiles.

Thanks everyone for their kind comments. It's funny, when people find out about my background (I design and build meat packing equipment) they would never assume I have a soft spot for animals.

I still have another 5 year old cat here, and she is the one who runs the place, not me. Funny how that seems to work out. BTW, I suspect she reads this blog, her favorite sleeping place is in a Rubbermaid storage tub now. Thinking she got the idea from Tai Shan :-)

I hope she won't be missing her friend too much. Give her lots of attention, Bruce. lol on the feed tub bed!
