Lunch Break

Inside the Panda Yard

Now that Tai Shan has had a week to enjoy his new tree, I decided to check in with him and find out what he thinks. When I caught up with the Butterstick he had a whole set of blueprints spread out across the sleeping area of the den inside of the exhibit enclosure.

"Hey Tai Shan, what are all the blueprints for, are you checking the progress of the new Asia Trail construction here at the zoo?" I asked.

"Of course not." he replied. "I'm going to modify my new tree."

I looked at the blueprints, and sure enough, he had detailed out a treehouse design that would be the envy of any kid in America, or any panda cub for that matter.

"Wow Tai Shan, this is going to be fabulous!" I exclaimed.

"Yes it is. I'm going to have my black tub up there to sleep in instead of having to wrap myself around all of those branches. You have to be a contortionist to hold on sometimes" Tai explained. "There's also a big screen television so I can watch all of my movies, high speed internet access so I can keep in touch with my legions of fans, and a special seating area in case Mommy decides to climb up my tree and spend the day with me. That was kind of tough in my old tree."

"It looks like you have thought of almost everything, but what's this box thing over here on the higher branch that you have circled on the drawings and marked 'Most Important'?" I asked.

"That's the best part. It's a fruitsicle dispenser. I haven't been too successful in training my keepers to climb the tree to bring me my treats that I so richly deserve. They think I need to climb down for some reason and go to them. Who's training who here?" he answered.

Wow, I can't wait to see it all when he's done.

Animal Planet Panda DVDs

When I visited the National Zoo a couple of weeks ago, I bought DVDs of the two Animal Planet specials on the NZ pandas: "Meet the Pandas: Washington's New Power Couple" and "A Panda is Born." I seem to remember reading that these are the first two of four or five (I'm not sure which) shows that Animal Planet is planning to do while Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are in the U.S.

Both shows are great. The 2005 "A Panda is Born," of course, is replete with cute shots of Tai Shan, and it also tells the interesting story of how Mei Xiang and Tian Tian didn't quite hook up in their first two breeding seasons. "Meet the Pandas," which came out in 2001, documents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian's journey from China to the U.S., including their re-introduction to each other in Wolong, the plane ride, and their debut to an adoring Washington public.

The DVD of "A Panda is Born" can be bought from the National Zoo or the Discovery Channel store. The DVD version of "Meet the Pandas" is hard to come by. I didn't find it on the Discovery.com store, on the NZ Web store, or at Amazon.com - or even on eBay, except in an Australian edition (in Region 4 DVD format) that may or may not work on U.S. machines (Region 1). However, you can get the VHS version on Amazon.

Panda Bears on cover of Newsweek Magazine

See the little pandas peeking at you from the right hand corner of Mar 27 Newsweek cover, out today. The cover story is about "The We in Web" with a lot of info about Flickr etc, but also has an inside 2 page spread about the China/Taiwan dispute over Taiwan receiving/not accepting the panda pair from China. The article has a link to a video and some pics and info at xtra.Newsweek.com on MSNBC.

How to put a chubby cubby in the tub series

How to put a chubby cubby in the tub series
Originally uploaded by somesai.

Hi everyone,

Here is today's report. I got there at 7:00 and found out he's ran out and got onto the pine tree. Tai than went onto his favorite tree. It was not a very eventful day for our little big boy. He was sleeping most of the time and waking up a little bit to tear off some of the bark on the tree.

As I was waiting, the volunteer showed up dried up panda poop and I didn't volunteer to hold it, haha. You can understand why.

I do agree that they need to give him a little seat with a cushion, haha, maybe a cushion is asking too much. Anyways, his cute tosh can be a cushion.

I'm amazed at how he can sleep on that tree with his tosh hanging out and without a branch to support it. He would occasionally turn but not much ground action today. I stayed up to 11:45 and decided to leave.

I did find out that he got out of his tree at 8:30 last night with a little coaxing.

As I was walking out, I recognized one of his zookeeper pictured in this photo. This is Theresa. She was the first zookeeper that I saw carrying Tai when I first visited him on Jan. 18. The first day I met butterstick without the pawshake.

I asked Theresa if she wanted any of her photos. She said she would love to have it and she passed her email to me. I asked how she got such an amazing job. She said she volunteered at the zoo at first and than got lucky. She also is a zookeeper for the apehouse.

I also asked if I can pass the other zookeepers along and she said it would be fine. So tomorrow I'll gather my photos and email it to her. I'll probably ask her more question about Tai in my email such as how does it feel to hold him and what does he smell like. I hope she response. I'll keep you posted.
Too bad the photos I have of Theresa are bad quality as it's was before my zoom lens. Oh well, there will always be other opportunities.

Brave New Climber

How I Learned Not To Fear The Tree
by Tai Shan Butterstick

Another awesome picture of yours truly taken by Frances

Hi to all my fans. As most of you know, i've found more luxurious (I know, big word for a cub) sleeping accomodations here in the panda yard.

I found my new tree yesterday when I was chasing my Mommy around trying to bite her hiney. For some reason she does not care for this game, or the ear biting game, not sure why. Anyhow....back to my new tree. It's big!!! Bigger than my old tree by far. I can still keep an eye on Dad in the other panda yard, but now I can see all of my fans lined up on the roof close-up. Boy, no offense, but you peoples look kinda funny compared to pandas, why do you shave off all of your fur?

When it was time last night for me to train my keepers in proper fruitsicle delivery some of you thought I was having trouble climbing down, and that I was afraid I was going to fall. THE STICK IS FEARLESS! Say it out loud, and repeat it three times. The real issue was the fact that I could not get my keepers to climb the tree and deliver my fruitsicle to my personal branch. I guess I'll have to work harder with them in the days to come until they get it right.

Hopefully they will get the utilities hooked up to my new favorite branch so I can get onto the internet without having to climb down and sneak on to keeper Brenda's computer. I've also asked for them to place my favorite black tub up there so I don't have those pesky branches poking me in the butt so much.

So cousin Su Lin, I can climb just as high as you can now, so stop teasing me when you call. I'm still working on Mommy to let us get a giant mud puddle to play in, but that is a battle for another day.

Your roly-poly panda pal,
Tai Shan Butterstick

I'm not sure what this is? It looked as though it was dripping. It could be a squared shaped fruitsicle. Brian put this on the branch to lure down butterstick from his new tree but it didn't work.

today there were two zookeeper. Brian and the blond lady. I'm not sure of her name but she put Butterstick on the further branch and he kept grabbing onto her shoe. He let out a loud bark and she stepped away from him. Butter's claws are so long and sharp. I'm sure that the keepers need to be careful with him even if he is just being playful. One swipe and it can hurt the keeper.

I heard the blond lady keeper call Brian over for help. She seemed nervous with butterstick today.

what do we do now

Hey Kathleen

Is that you in black at the far left of the pic?

The historic moment ...

... when Butterstick discovers the unsleeved tall tree.

UP, UP AND AWAY!!

I just looked on the Animal Planet Pandacam, and Tai Shan finally found his new tree!! Not the fir tree, but the other bigger tree. You can see him climbing ever higher, to the delight of the crowds at the panda cafe located in the background.

I'll check in with Tai Shan later today to get his reactions on his new climbing tree.

Tian's favorite spot

Tian's favorite spot
Originally uploaded by somesai.

Since Tian is rarely seen on the web cam, I thought I highlight him here. I've been observing his behavior and this is his favorite spot. He loves to rub his big tosh here. I have a video clip of him doing so. I think I've uploaded in flickr.

He also loves to sleep facing the tree and hugging it. I've also seen him climb up on taller trees and sleeping. He often goes to his pool and walk in and out. When he eats his bamboo, he faces the audience oppose to Mei always facing her back.

I've also seen him pounce against the wall out of frustration and often looking for Mei through the mesh. It's probably because of mating season. Tian is certainly full of personality like his son.

Cubs playing at Wolong

Saw some good news and some not so good news in the Panda Update section of pandasinternational.org.

Excerpt good: 'There are currently 174 pandas in captivity around the world. Wolong, which has completed its renovation of all the enclosures, currently has 41 pandas, counting the 6 new cubs. The remodeled enclosures pictured here (attached files) have lots of enrichment equipment for the pandas, so they can play and climb as they would in their natural habitat. Each enclosure has both indoor and outdoor areas as well as running water or ponds.'

Excerpt, bad: 'The most disturbing news we have recently heard is that the government has been relaxing the punishments for poaching. Converted from a capitol punishment to prison time and in some cases reducing the prison time. Unfortunately there is still a market for panda pelts in Hong Kong and other areas.'

EEK! I cannot imagine anyone wanting a pelt from one of these precious animals!

Tai Talks About Feelings

Did you see John Kelly's (columnist for the Washington Post) report on his conversation with Tai in a March 2oth article. Very cute - but I say our blog's Tai could give some tips on quotes to Mr. Kelly's Tai.
